Obituary

On August 4, 2010, Dorothy Vander Laan Crowley slipped away from those who loved her here on Earth and into the waiting arms of those who have gone before. Mrs. Crowley was born in Muskegon, Michigan July 11, 1917 to Henry Wortelboer and Lotta Mee Wortelboer. Her first husband, Bernard Vander Laan, preceded Dorothy in death in 1980. She married Wallace Crowley in 1986. After graduating from Ravenna High School in 1936, Dorothy worked several places over the years: Sealed Power, Ravenna Times and Hardy Herpolsheimers. In her working career, she always stood out. She was elected Moorland Township Clerk in 1956 and held that elected position for 32 years. The Muskegon Chapter of Michigan Township Association recognized Dorothy for her 28 years of service. In 1966 she started Dorothy’s Ceramics, teaching ceramics to young and old for over 13 years. She loved teaching and making friends with all her students. Dorothy was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, St. Catherine’s Alter Society, holding various offices and was an active member of Catholic Daughters Club. Joining the Macabbee years ago, she was the last living member of this local organization. She was a member of Farm Bureau and an active member of Trent Grange. After selling her residence in Ravenna, she and Wallace moved to Muskegon. There they have enjoyed being very active in several card clubs. They looked forward to those outings and enjoyed all the friends they have met. Dorothy was a kind, loving and generous woman. She loved her family and friends and was very loyal to them. Her Christian values were reflected in advocacy for any and all persons in need of help. Survivors include her husband Wallace Crowley, son Bernard “Jim” Vander Laan (Janet) of Ravenna, daughter Kay Darcy (Gary) of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Mary Ann Sierz (Mike) of Douglas, Wyoming. 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. 3 stepsons, David (Debbie) Crowley of Detroit, Donald (Roxanne) Crowley and Richard (Janet) Crowley of Ravenna. Survivors also include nephew Morris Wortelboer who lived in the Vander Laan home and many other nieces and nephews. Her parents, sisters, Nina Bacon and Virginia Wortelboer, brothers, Richard and Fred Wortelboer, granddaughter, Michelle Sierz and grandson, Joseph Sierz preceded her in death. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be conducted on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 12:00pm at St. Catherines Catholic Church in Ravenna with Father Bill Zink celebrant. The family will be present at the church to greet friends on Saturday from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Burial will take place at St. Catherines Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to: St. Catherine's School Fund, The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association and Hospice of Michigan.
