Obituary

Leon James McCarty age 90, of Sparta, MI passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Faith Hospice’s Trillium Woods surrounded by his loving family. Leon was born on April 14, 1929 in Fennville, MI to James and Lulah (Crane) McCarty. In 1948 his parents moved to Ravenna, MI and bought McCarty’s General Store at Kelly’s Corner where Leon met the love of his life, Elizabeth Joan Braspenninx. He and Joan were married on October 22, 1948 in Kent City, MI. Over the next eleven years, they were blessed with six daughters, June, Joy, Lori, Amy, Cindy and Sally. Leon and Joan bought the general store from his parents when they retired in 1966. A charter member of the Moorland Township Fire Department, Leon helped build his favorite fire truck and served as fire chief for six of his twenty plus years in the department. He served on the Frank's School Board, the Ravenna Public School Board, sponsored a bowling team at the Ravenna Bowl and he and Joan were Farm Bureau members for fifty years. After the McCarty’s sold the general store in 1976 they purchased General Distributing Company and Leon spent the next 13 years years selling hunting apparel from his Winnebago motor home to retail stores around the state of Michigan. An avid deer hunter, mushroom hunter and fisherman, Leon was a terrific story teller, a magnificent dancer, and he loved traveling, especially to Alaska. He took his wife on numerous cruises and his family on countless vacations, camping trips and adventures throughout Michigan, Ontario and other states. Leon spent the last years of his life with Joan at Harvest Way in Sparta, MI. Leon is survived by his wife of 71 years, Elizabeth Joan McCarty of Sparta; four daughters, June (Carl) Schutter of Ravenna, Joy (Jeff) Balasko and Amy McCarty of Kent City and Sally (Dennis) Rynberg of Montague. Son-in-law; Ray Maleski of Ravenna. 13 Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren and 7 Great Great Grandchildren. Many cousins, nieces, nephews and three very special friends Marlin, James and Curtis Omans. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister; Norma Oosterhaven, two daughters; Cynthia Gibson and Lori Maleski. Son-in-law; Joe Gibson, and Great Grandson; Parker Maleski. Funeral Services for Leon J. McCarty will be conducted on Friday, December 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Throop Funeral Home of Ravenna. Burial will be in Hilton Cemetery. The family will be at the Throop Funeral Home to greet friends and family on Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Faith Hospice and Sparta Senior Neighbors.
