Bernard “Barney” H. Simon, age 87 of Ravenna, died Thursday, December 24, 2009. Barney was born on January 2, 1922 in Ionia, Michigan to the late Henry and Frances (Troy) Simon. He married Doris Reichert on November 9, 1946 in Remus, MI at St. Michael’s Church and she survives. Barney served in the Navy during WWII and was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW, American Legion, Lion’s Club, charter member of Ravenna Conservation Club, volunteer fireman serving as Fire Chief of Ravenna Township Fire Dept., and was Santa Claus for the Village of Ravenna for 25 years. He worked as a Game Area Manager for the DNR for 37 years and retired in 1984. Barney is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris; 2 daughters: Mary June (Gale) Aho of Grand Rapids and JoAnn (Dr. Tim) Beechnau of Ravenna; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers: Gerald (Mary) Simon of Big Rapids, Emil Joe (Mary) Simon of Blanchard and Patrick (Sheral) Simon of Remus; 1 sister, Darlene Warner of Saginaw; and 1 sister-in-law, Margaret Simon of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by 5 brothers: John, Francis, James, Herman and Glen; 2 sisters: Rosemary Havens and Margaret Stefano; 3 brothers-in-law: David Warner, Orin Havens and Michael Stefano; and 1 sister-in-law, Marion Simon. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be conducted on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11:00am at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Ravenna with Father Phillip Sliwinski celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at St. Catherine’s Hall from 2:00pm to 5:30pm. The rosary will be prayed at 5:30pm. The family will also be present at the Church on Monday from 10:00am until time of service.
